Polar Bears
Polar Bears
Like humans, no two animals are exactly the same in appearance or personality. When sculpting, I try to convey a glimpse into their individual uniqueness. No one sculpture could ever truly represent such a wonderfully complex creature, so I sculpt several.
The Polar Bear Series is my observation of the mystique and majesty of nature.
My goal, through my work, is to reflect the love and admiration I feel for these animals... a reverence we humans should have for those other incredible inhabitants of this beautiful planet, our Earth.
Spirit Bears
Spirit Bears
British Columbia is a home to a truly rare bear. Off the coast, principally on
Princess Royal Island lives a colony of black bears. Not that unusual, except
that 1 in 10 is born white. It is not polar nor albino, it is a black bear with
white fur.
In Native folklore they are "Spirit Bears", a living reminder
of a time when the Earth was covered with ice.
They are also called "Kermode Bears" in honor of Frank Kermode,
a former director of the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria.
Canadian artist Keith Sandulak, long famed for his work with
Polar, Grizzly, Black and Brown Bears has introduced
2 new "Spirit
Bears", "Island Royalty" and "Princess".
Because the world has identified Canada as a "Bear Country" and is aware of
Keith's celebrated talent, his sculptures have become ideal purchases for
tourists and locals alike.

creatures,

Grizzly Bears
Grizzly Bears average about twice the size of the black bear, weighing 600 to 800 pounds as an adult male. They mate in the late spring. Cubs, usually two, weighing about 14 ounces are born in the winter den. They stay with their mother some 18 months.
Note the claws on Winter's Edge and the muscle between the shoulders of these bears. These are the digging tools required to pursue the staples of their diet, berries, leaves and roots.
The Grizzly remains a force, a symbol of untrampled nature. "His is a dignity and power matched by no other in the wilderness." Andy Russell, naturalist.

Black Bears
Despite their name, black bears can actually appear in a variety of colours. There are brown black bears, white black bears, the Kermode "White Spirit" bear of British Columbia, and even the blue glacier bear.
They are not finicky eaters and will rear up on hind legs to sift the breeze for food odors.
"If a pine needle falls in the forest, the eagle will see it, the deer will hear it and the bear will smell it."

Brown Bears
During late summer as hibernation draws near, bears will consume up to 20,000 calories a day, equal to 40 hamburgers with double cheese and 40 sunday desserts.
